As sons and daughters of the King, there are times we will be taunted, ridiculed, and lied to by the enemy, Satan. Satan has no REAL power over us unless we give it to him. His aim is to distract us from Christ in any way possible.
Even though he knows how the story ends he will try and try… and try again to tempt us to recant the truth of Jesus living within us with a thousand different enticing ideas. He’ll still try to lie to revive our dead flesh in order to attempt to bring glory to himself.
Satan is all about his self-glorification just as much as God is about his own worthy and holy glory. Do not be flippant with the idea that Satan won’t make every attempt to bring himself glory through those tiny cracks of disbelief we all have.
We must remember that Satan (and his demons) watch us. They can NOT read our minds, but they can lie to us, read our body language, and hear our verbal cues. Satan is like the ultimate evil psychiatrist attempting to lead our thoughts and actions through deceitful questions and creating distractions that keep our eyes off Christ.
We have MUCH MORE power than Satan could ever hope to experience through the indwelling of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit living within us. Christ himself defeats Satan several times throughout scripture and ultimately once and for all when he died on the cross and rose again. (Mat 4:10, Jhn 13:28, Jhn 19:30) We can learn how to defeat Satan by the examples Jesus gave us.
Know your Identity: Unlocking Jesus’ life within you and realizing His extravagant Love for you; restores you.
Jesus’ death on the cross was the ultimate defeat of Satan. Jesus’ proclamation in John 19:30, τετέλεσται (it is finished) literally FINISHED and crushed the power that Satan had over God’s people.
Through the Gospel, we are restored to God through this love, despite sinful behavior. When we hear, and believe the Gospel’s message of Love a transformation occurs and we no longer identify as sinners. We become God’s perfect and blemish free creation…remember, God makes no mistakes. The restoration to God through Jesus’ fullness empowers us to defeat Satan in the world.
Rebuke: When you feel fear, guilt, condemnation, etc…shout “in Jesus’ name Satan leave me!”
God does not guilt or condemn us. He doesn’t bring fear on us. God is good ALL the time. When you experience these (and other sinful thoughts involving such as sexual immorality, slander, judgment, etc…) which are not of Christ, recognize them as lies from Satan.
Jesus rebukes Satan on the Mount in Mathew 4:10, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.'” We too have the authority to rebuke Satan like the bad dog that he is.
Sometimes when I am afraid or emotional regarding thoughts I just speak Jesus’ name out loud, over and over. There is so much power in his name that it alone can rebuke Satan and he MUST leave you! AMEN!
We all have those we love whom just don’t understand or want to understand the power of the love of Jesus Christ. They don’t understand why He deserves glory. It’s heartbreaking. Our greatest desire is to see them restored by bending their knee in humbleness to Jesus. Simply put, we want our loved ones to recognize how much God loves them! Pray for them!
Satan hates all things that glorify God and not himself. He will leave in utter disgust at passionate petitions to God to take sinners from his clutches. Jesus prayed often. I’m sure he prayed for MANY unbelievers, namely his beloved disciples, often when he went off alone to pray. (Mat 26:36)
Ignore: Satan lies to us. When you next hear him whisper negative ideas silence him with no reaction to his lie.
In many ways, Satan is like an annoying little brother. He keeps poking, staring, repeating you…he’s ANNOYING! I remember my younger brother often getting upset with me in the car when I would sing. He’d say, “Brianna, Quit singing.” A few silent minutes would go by and…” quit singing in your head! You’re swaying, I can see you doing it!”
Yup annoying brothers see everything and pick at it. Satan is much the same. See, he can’t read your mind or REALLY KNOW what is going on in your head, but he is a MASTER at body language decipher.
Many times he uses our own cues to know which sinful thoughts to distract us with. If you are downtrodden and scowling, he’s going to try to keep you that way longer with negative thoughts about yourself, God, others, etc…
Those thoughts keep you distracted from the beauty and grace of Christ. Much like my annoying brother did, Satan stops and hangs his head in defeat when he sees he can no longer get the desired reaction from you. (Luke 4:13)
Praise: Praise Jesus with scripture, song, art, poems, dance, etc… be like David; be undignified for Jesus!
This is personally my favorite way to defeat Satan. I love to sing out praises to Jesus, even when emotional and have difficulty carrying the correct pitch.
Most of the time, when facing difficulty, I intentionally sing of his goodness, glory and worthiness. I love David Crowder Band’s Undignified. I think of King David tearing his clothes off for God’s praises when I hear it. (2 Sam 2:11) Very undignified, but very effective!
Not only does our praise through the many different mediums God himself creates and uses through us bring Himself glory, but it drives Satan away for he hates the beauty of creation whether it be the creation of life, art, music, etc…
When we praise because of Love and not an obligation it’s a double whammy, flick on the nose for nasty ole’ Lucifer when it’s included in creative praise.
You see God loves us so much he bestows his power to us, through Jesus, to defeat His enemy. So the next time the devil tries to pull you into his snare use one of the 5 Effective Ways to Defeat Satan.
